Local independent superlabel Sub Pop Records has been going out of business since 1988, and its year-long anniversary celebration is culminating with a two-day lineup of Sub Pop’s groundbreaking artists. As if that isn’t enough, all proceeds are being donated to charity. Nope, I don’t know why The Shins aren’t booked. Okay, read on..

“Sub Pop would not have been Sub Pop without Seattle,” Poneman says. “Seattle is an essential component to the story. Sub Pop is less geographical [now] - it has less of a regional focus. But Seattle is still home - I can complain about the irresponsible development going on downtown, I can complain about the traffic and real-estate prices, but it’s still my home. And I think I can speak for Sub Pop: The people living in Seattle have always been very supportive of Sub Pop.” — Seattle Times

Class A Face-melting, Stomach-churning, Palm-sweating, Loin-tingling Two Day Music Candystore Assault That’s Not Bumbershoot or Sasquatch. — Northwest Music Blog

20 years ago this month, Sub Pop Records’ Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman threw caution (and their dayjobs) to the wind and rented an office in Seattle’s Terminal Sales Building. Two decades on, that little Pacific Nortwestern upstart has become an indie juggernaut. — Pitchfork

See you there!

Ticket Alert - The Beach Boys

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 27, 2008, at 10:45 am (Presales)

It will be the first ever major concert at the 54,000-capacity Safeco Field, and unfortunately the presale is limited to Mariners season ticket holders. It’s hard to keep up with the lawsuits and the name changes and the crazy of The Beach Boys, but hit Ticketmaster at 10 on Tuesday because this show will be a must-see nonetheless.

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 27, 2008, at 10:19 am (Presales)

The highly-anticipated new album from Sigur Ros has this mouthful of a title: “Med Sud i Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust.” Translation: “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly.” Sounds like a good long show for the price. Password: VERIZON

Long in the rumor pipeline, and finally announced! Maroon 5 / Counting Crows will show their environmental colors with carbon offsets and carpools, which is awesome. What is not is the absence of Sara Bareilles, who opens the earlier leg of the tour. Password: CONCERT

Hootenanny Alert - Weezer

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 19, 2008, at 3:42 pm (Upcoming)

That wacky Weezer is presenting several West Coast mini-concerts, and invite you to learn the songs and jam right along (with any instrument, or just your hands and voice). The End 107.7 will be recording the session and playing it on-air. Expect a real tour sometime in the fall. Instructions on how to play the setlist are below, and you can win one of the 200 slots HERE:

Yes Cancels Summer Tour

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 6, 2008, at 9:58 am (Upcoming)

yes.jpgWayback English prog-rockers Yes has cancelled their WaMu stop on August 15. In fact, the whole 40th-Anniversary summer tour has been cancelled, due to lead singer Jon Anderson’s case of acute respiratory failure. Normally such an announcement is PR-speak for poor ticket sales, but I have a feeling this is the real deal. Get well and come back soon.

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 5, 2008, at 10:31 pm (Presales)

The Raconteurs are not a side-project Supergroup anymore since The White Stripes and other members’ bands are all on hiatus. And the show will not be an intimate affair like their hottest-ticket-in-town gig at Neumo’s recently. Tickets will be gone in minutes for this big rock ‘n roll show. Ticket Alert - New Kids On The Block

Modified by Dean in Seattle on June 4, 2008, at 9:04 pm (Presales)

Fourteen years later, the “first white boy band” reunites for a worldwide arena tour, reportedly selling out in many cities. If you’re old enough to remember “Hangin’ Tough,” you’re old enough to have the American Express card required for presale. And hey, NKOTB is probably aging better than the Dome.
